Two foreigners accused in illegal crossing of border were released with the legal support of AM law firm

Two citizens of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan who had arrived in Armenia from the Islamic Republic of Iran and were accused of illegally crossing the Armenian state border as a group and using forged documents, were released by the court’s decision.

The defense in the court case was carried out by Sipan Kesoyan, legal consultant and attorney at AM Law Firm.

The defendants stated that they did not know each other prior to the trip and had met only on the plane, therefore the act could not have been committed as a group. After nearly a year of investigation and trial proceedings, the court found that there was insufficient evidence to prove a prior agreement or coordinated action between them. As a result, the act was reclassified from Part 3 of Article 44-469 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Armenia (attempted illegal border crossing as a group) to Part 1 of the same article — attempted illegal border crossing without a group. By the court’s decision, the defendants, who had been in detention for about a year, were released in the courtroom.
